More new-car buyers opt for 7-year loans

More new-car buyers are stretching out their loan payments as long as possible -- as many as seven years -- and experts wonder if the trend is another financial time bomb.

While many buyers remember the days when ads touted 48-month loans, today the biggest growth is coming in loans lasting up to 84 months. That's longer than most people are expected to want to keep their new car.

The longest-term new-car loans -- 73 to 84 months -- have jumped 25.1% in the past year and now make up 19.5% of total new-car lending, according to Experian Automotive. All other loan-length categories, in fact, have become less popular as buyers shift to longer terms to get lower payments.

The next-shorter category -- 61 to 72 months and considered a very long loan only a few years ago -- now is 41.7% of new-car loans, Experian says. That's down 3.2% from a year ago, but it's still by far the biggest single loan-length category.

Short loans of 25 to 36 months -- the time limit that many financial planners and advisers recommend not be exceeded -- fell 24.7%, and the 37-to-48-month loan category was off 2.4%.

The phenomenon marks a turnabout from the Great Recession, when lenders were tight with even shorter term car loans. Now, low interest rates, near-record low loan delinquency rates, high average used-car prices and cars lasting longer all appear to be contributing to the trend.

Also having an effect: Old trade-ins. The average age of vehicles on the road is about 11 years, while the average transaction price of a new vehicle has gone from $25,703 in 2002 to $30,592 now, according to researcher TrueCar.

So people finally trading for a new model might have 11-year-old trade-ins worth nearly nothing, even as they try to buy new vehicle priced thousands of dollars more than when they last bought.

Long-term loans with lower payments might be the only answer for those buyers, even though they'll pay more overall than with a shorter loan.

At the average new-car interest rat! e of 3.94%, the monthly payment on a $28,000, 48-month loan would be $631.46. That works out to a $30,310.08 repayment, including the $2,310.18 in interest. Same deal, 84 months: $381.95 monthly payment, for a total of $32,083.80 paid, or $4,084.11 in interest.

Thus, the longer loan costs the borrower $1,773.93 more in interest.

"You end up 'upside down' (owing more than the car is worth) for a longer time," says Greg McBride, senior financial analyst for Bankrate.com. "You are going to pay down the balance at a snail's pace while the vehicle depreciates rapidly."

"It's definitely market driven," says Allen Foster, general manager of Smart Motors in Madison, Wis."Customers want a vehicle, but have a budget to work within." At his big Toyota dealership, 16% of loans now average 72 months or longer, up from 11% as recently as 2010.

Lee Auto Malls, a family-owned multi-brand dealer chain in Maine, is seeing longer-term loans and says it reflects stagnant incomes and tight family budgets at a time when new-car prices are rising.

Customers want to "keep a payment at $300 a month when a car is now $28,000," says Chairman Adam Lee. Finance companies are giving customers want they want, but he says "it scares me."

Lenders say, though, it's not necessarily cash-strapped customers who opt for the longer loans.

"It's people with higher credit" generally, says Toyota Credit spokesman Justin Leach. "A lot get paid off before hitting 84 months."

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Teresa Rivas]

A better-than-expected first quarter from Bank of America (BAC) (although the stock turned negative) and a rosy industrial production reading helped markets shrug off weaker housing starts that marked a sluggish start to the spring selling season and slowing growth data from China. PNC Financial Services(PNC)and W.W. Grainger(GWW)were both climbing after beating earnings expectations as well.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The early read is mixed. Shareholders have seemed to lose patience with companies whose investment cycle seems overly extended, aggressive, or risky. For example, many shareholders have exited MSM as its investment strategy became clearer and more dilutive all the while that growth was slowing. On the other hand, investors in both 3M and EMR have taken things in more balanced stride, willing to take higher growth levels as a payback for bigger spend. It a tricky situation because statistically companies who are able to raise margins and ROIC the most are more likely to have stocks that outperform peers. But there are examples of companies that have invested heavily, driven to higher growth levels, and been able to more than offset the higher spend with operating leverage from the higher volume growth. DistributorsW.W. Grainger (GWW) andFastenal (FAST) are two notable examples.

What Seadrill does see for small and midsized companies is that these operators will look to sign short-term contracts for exploration drilling. Larger companies like BP will counterbalance this with long-term drilling campaigns. Overall, Seadrill expects oil companies to continue to increase their budgets and spending on ultra-deep water by double digits. The company sees a strong trend here which also bodes well for competitors such as Noble Corp (NYSE: NE  ) and Transocean (NYSE: RIG  ) .

Has Eurozone unemployment peaked?

LONDON (AP) — The eurozone's labor market appears to have stabilized, official figures indicated Tuesday, another sign that the region's economy is recovering from its longest-ever recession.

Though Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, said the unemployment rate across the 17-member eurozone held steady at 12% in August, it found the number of people out of work fell for the third month running. That's the first time the region has enjoyed such a run since April 2011.

In total, the number of unemployed dipped by 5,000 to 19.18 million, triggering hopes that the 20 million threshold that many economists had been forecasting this year will not be struck and that the 12.1% record high booked in June may not be breached.

"The eurozone's jobless rate is past its peak for the current economic cycle," said Zach Witton, an economist at Moody's Analytics. "However, the unemployment rate will fall only gradually as the weak recovery provides limited support to profit margins, giving companies little incentive to boost hiring."

5 Best Gas Utility Stocks To Watch Right Now

As usually happens in a recovery, the modest improvement in the labor market has lagged behind the region's emergence from recession by a few months. The economy grew in the second quarter by a modest quarterly rate of 0.3% after contracting for six straight quarters, its longest recession since the euro currency was launched in 1999.

Most surveys suggest the eurozone expanded further during the summer months and that the growth won't rely only on Germany, Europe's largest economy. Even Greece, mired in recession for the best part of six years as the global financial crisis morphed into a crippling sovereign debt crisis, is expected to start growing soon.

Hopes for an improvement in the eurozone economy were supported by a closely-watched manufacturing survey released Tuesday.

The purchasing managers' i! ndex for the manufacturing sector — a gauge of business activity published by financial information company Markit — was 51.1 points in September. Though down on August's 26-month high of 51.4, the survey points to continuing expansion — anything above the 50 threshold indicates growth.

"This is good news for the eurozone but also for the global economy," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit. "The downturn in demand caused by the region's recession and the uncertainty generated by its debt crisis had cast a shadow over economic recoveries across the globe. But we must not get too carried away."

Over the past three years, the eurozone has been the laggard of the world economy as it grappled with a debt crisis that at various times threatened the future of the euro currency itself.

Countries across the region, but mainly in the south, such as Greece, Portugal and Spain, have had to enact tough austerity measures to convince bond market investors that they could get a handle on their public finances. A combination of recession, poor management and expensive bank bailouts had caused public debt to swell in the region.

The problems afflicting the eurozone weighed on sentiment around the world, putting a brake on the global economic recovery. The eurozone, with its population of around 330 million, is a key market for global firms seeking to do business.

The wider 28-country European Union, which includes non-euro countries such as Britain and Sweden and has a population of a little over 500 million, has also struggled in the wake of the eurozone's woes in recent years. Here, too, the unemployment rate appears to have steadied, staying unchanged in August at 10.9% for the fourth month running.

Olli Rehn, the EU's commissioner for economic affairs, warned that despite the indications of a rebound, the crisis in the eurozone is not yet over. He said governments should continue their economic reforms and debt cuts, lest they stymie the budding recovery.

He also ! lamented the shutdown of the U.S. government, but said that he thought the impact on other economies would be limited if it didn't last very long.

"But, of course, the recovery in the global economy, and also in the European economy, is so fragile that they do not need any new risks or any new elements of political instability," he told reporters in Paris.

Few economists think the eurozone's current economic growth is enough to significantly bring down unemployment, particularly among the young. The manufacturing PMI survey, for example, showed companies in the sector were still shedding jobs in September, though at a slower rate than before.

The Eurostat figures also mask huge divergences across the eurozone: While Germany has an unemployment rate of 5.2%, Spain's jobless rate stood at 26.2%. The situation in Greece is even worse, with 27.9% of people out of work in June — Greek figures are compiled on a different time frame.

The situation among the young — that is, potential workers under the age of 25 — is even more acute. Greece and Spain, for example, have over half their youth unemployed. In Greece, youth unemployment stood at a stunning 61.5% in June.

As well as being a burden to a country's coffers, sky-high levels of youth unemployment have an additional social cost of denying potential workers skills and experience — that's a long-term cost to the region's economic potential and has also fueled an increase in social tensions.

GasJack unit fleet

The Company GasJack unit allows it to perform compression, liquids separation and optional gas metering services all from one skid. The Company focuses on the natural gas wells in its operating regions that produce between 30,000 and 300, 000 million cubic feet of natural gas per day (Mcf/d) and less than 50 barrels of water per day.

The Company utilize its natural gas powered GasJack compressors, or GasJack units, to provide wellhead compression services. Its GasJack units increase gas production by reducing surface pressure, which allows wellbore fluids that would normally block gas flow to produce up the well. The 46-horsepower GasJack unit is an integrated power/compressor unit equipped with an industrial 460-cubic inch, V-8 engine that uses natural gas from the well to power one bank of cylinders that, in turn, powers the other bank of cylinders, which provide compression.

VJack unit fleet

The Company utilizes its electric VJack compressors, or VJack units, to provide its production enhancement services on wells loc! ated in larger, mature oil fields, such as the Permian Basin in West Texas and New Mexico, and in environmentally sensitive markets, such as California, when electric power is available at the production site. Its VJack unit is designed for vapor recovery applications (to capture natural gas vapors emitting from closed storage tanks after production and to reduce storage tank pressures) and backside pumping applications on oil wells (to reduce pressures caused by casing head gas in oil wells with pumping units). Based on GasJack unit technology, the VJack unit is capable of full wellbore stream production, and can handle up to 50 barrels per day of liquids on a standard skid package.

The Company GasJack and VJack compressor units are mounted on steel skids. ePumper system Utilizing its ePumper system, SCADA satellite telemetry-based reporting system, it remotely monitor in real time, whether its services are being continuously provided at each well site. The ePumper system improves the response time of its field personnel.

Well Monitoring and Automated Sand Separation Services

The Company also provides ongoing well monitoring services and, in Mexico, automated sand separation services. Its well monitoring services consist of ongoing testing and evaluation of wells to determine how its wellhead compression services are optimizing the production from a well.

The Company utilizes well-testing equipment to gather well data that its personnel analyze to determine the expected production uplift that may be achieved by the provision of its wellhead compression services on the well, as well as to determine the optimal way to utilize its wellhead compression services to provide for maximum production uplift. These services allow well operators to make informed decisions about how to maximize the production from a well.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Although oil prices ended the year at multi year lows, now would be the time to take a closer look atsmall cap gas compression or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) stocks likeUsa Compression Partners LP (NYSE: USAC), CSI Compressco LP (NASDAQ: CCLP) and Propell Technologies Group Inc (OTCBB: PROP) before oil and gas prices inevitably rise again. To begin with, natural gas compression services are used to transport natural gas and specifically to getnatural gas from low-pressure wells into gathering systems, storage and processing facilitiesas well as to maintain production as reservoir pressure declines. Compression servicesare also used to extract gas fromunconventional natural gas sources like shale plays. Meanwhile,so-called enhanced oil recovery or EOR is just a generic term for the techniques used for increasing the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field with potential methods including steam flood and water flood injectionor hydraulic fracturing(so-called fracking). Naturally, demand for compression services and EOR technologies would be impacted by oil and gas commodity prices.

    Friday's Volume: 543,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 147,784

    Volume % Change: 252%

From a technical perspective, LXU ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $31.45 and back above its 50-day moving average of $32.51 with heavy upside volume. This stock also flirted with its 200-day moving average at $35.22, before closing just below that level at $33.72.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in LXU as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $32.51 and then once it sustains a move or close above its 200-day at $35.22 to Friday's high of $36 with volume that's near or above 147,784 shares. If we get that move soon, then LXU will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $40.37 to $42.79.

With a market cap of only $893 million, it's not like LSB Industries, Inc. (NYSE:LXU) is the kind of com! pany that! garners a ton of attention. On the other hand, over the past several months, LXU has garnered far more attention than it likely wanted. The turbulence seems to be mostly behind it, however, and though the stock is now overbought thanks to the proverbial clearing of the dust, for long-haul investors, LSB Industries may be worth a closer look.

Hot Chemical Companies For 2014

After pulling a U-Turn, showing some strength and then stalling, insider buying picked-up the pace a touch last week. The number of purchase records moved to 457 from 362 from week-to-week. The uptick happened in a week when stocks hopped up-and-down faster than a fire-walker without mind control.

As our regular insider readers know, iStock likes to look beyond the obvious and seeks cluster buys, eight figure buys, past-performance of previous buyswe also like to consider the background of the buyer. Who is he/she? Then, connect some dots based on the profile we piece together since the insider doesn't put a reason for buying in their Form 4; although, it would be tremendously helpful if they did.

This week's candidate, Phillips 66 (PSX) hits on a couple of iStock's favorite markers. Phillips 66 operates as an independent downstream energy company. The company operates in three segments: Refining and Marketing (R&M), Midstream, and Chemicals.

(TSE) (11% of the market share), one of the three big names in the industry. This will create a new company worth $29 billion. Combined with the 14% market share of Applied Materials, this new company would capture the biggest slice of the market share, and the broad product portfolio of both companies ensures the coverage of many segments of the market.
