Before Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) rolled out its new, lightning-fast Internet service in Shawnee, Kan.; Provo, Utah; and Austin, Texas, Fiber seemed little more than one of the search giant's playthings -- like self-driving cars or home delivery services.
Last month's article, written shortly after Google announced it was heading to Austin -- before Provo and Shawnee were thrown into the mix -- discussed the "what ifs" of Fiber and its impact on the future of cable. Today, there are no more "what ifs." Fiber's real, it's going to generate revenue for Google, and it will change the way cable operates, in spite of what Time Warner Cable's (NYSE: TWC ) CEO Glenn Britt says.
Did he really say that?
It was only a week ago Britt was quoted as saying of Fiber: "they have a glow about them ... [but are] no different than other overbuilders that have failed to overtake cable operators." Really? Then why did Britt's Time Warner Cable, shortly after Fiber landed in the Kansas City area, increase its Internet connectivity speeds for customers and drop the monthly fee from $45 to just $30 a month?

States get their tax revenue from a variety of different sources. Unlike the federal government, which relies almost solely on income taxes, most states add on property taxes and sales taxes to help finance statewide and local government expenses. The immense popularity of online marketplaces Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN ) and eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY ) show the length to which consumers will go to avoid having to pay sales taxes, as those companies have traditionally been able to avoid having to collect sales tax in most of the jurisdictions they serve. Moreover, the competitive advantage that they've gained has helped send brick-and-mortar retailers Best Buy (NYSE: BBY ) and Sears Holdings (NASDAQ: SHLD ) into serious difficulty, and countless small businesses suffer from the disadvantage of having to charge their customers sales taxes that those customers could avoid by going to Amazon, eBay, or other untaxed online retail sources.

This trend in online spending has been a boon to Internet retailers, such as Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN ) and eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY ) . However, not everyone is happy with the massive influx of online shoppers. State governments, for example, complain that billions of dollars in sales taxes are lost each year under the current legislation.

Yes, it’s true that the PayPal division is growing much faster than online-auction revenue is for eBay. Last quarter, the payment arm of the company saw a 19% increase in year-over-year revenue, while the auction and online-retailing business has struggled to grow at all, facing formidable opponent Amazon.com (AMZN). Icahn doesn’t see — or perhaps doesn’t want to see — however, that much of PayPal’s growth is the result of the online auction division.

Tuesday came along, and shares were flying high, up 3.57%, with a few analysts crediting Microsoft's attacks on Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) for the rise. Microsoft and a number of other technology companies are claiming Google's open-source operating system gives it an unfair advantage over the competition. The main problem is that Google gives its operating system away, and Microsoft, which charges for its operating systems, can't compete. The EU is looking into Microsoft's allegations against Google, but we'll have to wait and see who wins this battle.

Jeff Chiu/AP So far, 2014 has been a high-scoring year for initial public stock offerings. The first quarter saw more IPO activity than any other initial quarter since 2000, with 64 companies listing on various U.S. exchanges raising a collective $10.6 billion. That's more than double the number of IPOs that took place in the first quarter of 2013. This is directly related to the health of the overall stock market. Generally speaking, the better shares are performing, the higher the chance of an issuer being successful on IPO day. After all, who's eager to buy anything when the market's in the doldrums? Yet even in a good environment for IPOs, companies occasionally get the jitters and withdraw their listings. Sometimes this is due to the overall atmosphere on the market; sometimes it's because of difficulties with the issuing company itself; sometimes it's both. Whatever the reason(s), the notable examples below scampered away before they could become publicly traded entities. Square One of the top anticipated IPOs of 2014 was for this cutting-edge e-commerce company, which pioneered the use of smartphone and tablet payment card readers. Then there's Square's impeccable geek credentials, thanks in no small part to its founder-CEO Jack Dorsey, who was one of the guiding lights behind Twitter (TWTR). That, apparently, wasn't enough to bring it to market. In late February, media reports had it that the company postponed its planned IPO indefinitely. It seems that it's burning through cash very quickly and doesn't have enough revenue to cover this. Instead of listing on an exchange, the firm is reportedly looking for a deep-pocketed suitor and has allegedly held discussions with Google (GOOG), Apple (AAPL) and eBay (EBAY), and possibly even one of its investors, Visa (V), regarding a potential buyout. Square denies it has been in acquisition talks. Trustwave Holdings Another nonstarter in the tech IPO space was Trustwave, which provides on-demand data secu

Of course, banks can't know when an attack is merely disruptive, and when it may be covering for criminal activity. Security company Symantec (NASDAQ: SYMC ) has commented that these assaults have become a way for hackers to distract banks while funds are illegally withdrawn. Though most of the thefts have occurred in Europe, where attacks have progressed from website outages to actual bank heists, at least one U.S. bank, Citigroup, disclosed some losses due to cyber thievery earlier this year.

The first "insider" stock to buy is Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), one of the leading internet security providers in the world.
Symantec makes a wide range of products that help individuals and businesses keep their computers and mobile devices safe from viruses and malware. The stock recently dropped sharply after the company fell short of analysts' quarterly earnings expectations, but CEO Stephen Bennett clearly disagrees with the market's opinion of the company's prospects. He got out his checkbook and added 1,000,000 shares of stock for a total cost of more than $2.2 million. He now owns 488,000 shares of Symantec stock and clearly has high expectations for the future of Symantec's stock price.
